Original US pressing of ‘Spankin’ Brand New’ by American soul and jazz vocalist Spanky Wilson, released in 1969 on Mothers Records & The Snarf Company. Produced and arranged by H.B. Barnum, this debut album introduced Wilson’s rich, expressive vocal style across a warm blend of soul, jazz and orchestral pop arrangements, and has since become a highly regarded cult title among collectors of late-1960s soul and crossover jazz vocals.
Born Louella Wilson and raised in Pittsburgh, Spanky Wilson began singing professionally while still in her teens and soon found herself working with figures such as Jimmy McGriff and Stanley Turrentine before recording under the guidance of H.B. Barnum in Los Angeles. ‘Spankin’ Brand New’ was her debut LP and remains one of the key titles in her discography. The album includes tracks such as ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’, ‘I’ve Waited A Long Long Time’, ‘Love Has Me By The Hand’, ‘The Other Girl’, ‘Mighty Great Feeling’ and ‘The Last Day Of Summer’.
